My name is Lucas Suero and I am a student at Nichols School in Buffalo, New York. I’ve been heavily influenced by one of my mentors, Lucy Sanchez, who is from the Sacred Valley in Peru. Lucy’s uncontrollable urge to help others, especially children and animals, can be attested by anyone who knows her. Much of her love and willingness to help can be traced to her heritage of the Andean culture. Sixteen years ago, Lucy left her family to come to the USA to ensure she could give them a good education and a bright future. Her ultimate sacrifice taught me about the inherent generosity of the Andean culture and inspired me to find a way to give back to her community.

In June of 2019, I traveled to the Andes in Peru and stayed at the Sol y Luna Hotel. During my stay, I paid a visit to the school and pre-school of Sol y Luna. Quite unexpectedly, this visit had an enormous impact on me and left me with an urge to help.

Located in the Sacred Valley at over 9,000 feet above sea-level and a couple of hours from Cusco, Peru, these schools provide education, transport, and at times housing for students. What struck me is that these schools provide much more than just education. It unites people from different Andean villages that would otherwise not be able to get advanced education; it allows these children to think of a future. This is even more apparent when one sees that the mentally and physically handicapped children are being integrated into the same school setting, allowing them to be equal to the other students. Due to their limitations, these handicapped children traditionally have been excluded from village life as they had little to contribute to the agricultural community and are marginalized. At Sol y Luna one can witness how the schools are teaching these handicapped children to overcome their disabilities and find a role in which they can participate and contribute.

In developing countries like Peru, it is very common to see a deep division between the rich and poor, which also tends to be related to race. Yet, at Sol y Luna, the schools find a way to connect the rich and poor and dissolve social barriers. Believing so much in her schools, Petit Miribel (the hotel owner and founder of the schools) has sent her children, along with other ex-pat children, to attend.

This is not just about these schools up in the Andes - it is much more. It is more about how an institution operating in a developing country with much fewer resources and stronger racial and economic divisions can create an environment where everyone is equal and can share a bright future.
