I was four years old when I began to dance. By age eight I knew that ballet was my passion and life focus. At age 12, I began searching for ways to make my dream of becoming a professional dancer a reality. After passing two auditions I was accepted at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts (LACHSA). I completed my Freshman and Sophomore year at LACHSA - which included academics and dance - while also taking ballet classes six days of the week outside of school and maintaining a 4.1 average.

To fulfill my dream to be a professional dancer I knew that by the age of 15 I should be prepared to audition for a professional ballet school. I learned about the Boston Ballet School (BBS) through my dance studio and LACHSA. In the spring of this year, I auditioned for their 2019 summer intensive - a five week-long program - and was very excited to be accepted. I knew it would give me the opportunity to see if the BBS community was right for me, and it’s ideal. And they liked me, too! Having just completed the summer program, they’ve invited me to stay and attend their Pre-Professional Program year round!
Being accepted at Boston Ballet is a new and important step toward making my dream of becoming a professional ballerina come true. It’s going to be a little scary to leave my family and friends in California, but I’m determined and excited to move forward with this amazing opportunity that I’ve worked so hard for.

I have the love and support of my family, but we need your help. Attending a professional ballet school year round at 15 requires not only a rigorous dance schedule, but dedicating the time and focus to attend online high school. Finally there are the expenses of room and board, tuition, daily transportation fees, and ballet supplies like pointe shoes and leotards.
Base monthly expenses come up to: $1400, which does not include air fare or tuition for high school.
It’s all a little overwhelming, but I’m hopeful to keep working toward achieving the dream I’ve had since I was four years old.

I sincerely appreciate your consideration and support,
Sofia Marie Lusitana
