We were recently awarded a $10,000 grant from the Lemelson-MIT program to build a prototype of our invention idea; a personal safety proximity sensor. As high school students who are dually enrolled in college classes, our team was compelled to help students feel safer because of the increase in crime on our own college campus. Especially at night, when many students are walking to and from evening classes by themselves, safety and the ability to see their surroundings is imperative. In surveying over 160 college students in and around Southern California, more than half said that safety is their primary concern. Therefore, we have designed an invention named ‘Iris’ that is meant to provide a reliable, wearable and affordable solution to students feeling safer on campus. We now realize that this invention has broader applications, and if we design Iris well, we can help address many safety issues for various individuals, communities and groups.
The culmination of our grant cycle is to present our working prototype to the intellectual community of MIT in June 2018. Though our grant helps fund our design and engineering costs, travel expenses are not included. We are trying to raise money to pay for airline tickets and travel expenses for our 11 student team members and 2 adult mentors to travel from from Los Angeles, California to Boston, Massachusetts.
Thank you for considering donating to our cause and for your support of increasing personal safety in college and broader communities. We are passionate about bringing our idea to market and truly making a difference in our world!
