When death is certain, life is put in perspective. In the final weeks, days, and moments of a person’s life, we realize what’s truly important. It’s the experiences, conversations, and people you share moments with that leave a well-lived life.
Now imagine that you are alone as you approach your final days and moments. No more chances to connect, hug, laugh, or look into the eyes of the person you love most in the world. Only silence. Only solitude.
All because of the cost of a plane ticket.
At Give A Mile, we're on a mission to ensure that no one dies alone. We believe that the cost of travel should never be why loved ones are not together in the final goodbye. That’s why Give A Mile was started - to help those without the means to take the trip for that final visit.
We saw during the height of the pandemic, when people were excluded from bedsides and often said their final goodbyes virtually, how difficult this is. Not being able to touch, embrace, and look directly into the eyes of the dying person takes away the opportunity to connect and communicate compassion, gratitude, and love directly, leading to additional distress for the bereaved.
To date, Give A Mile has proudly funded 872 flights of compassion, impacting thousands of people in 51 countries.
Give A Mile has supported people like Jennifer, who was flown to her estranged father’s hospice bedside to have long overdue conversations that would bring peace to her dad in his final moments and help Jennifer to heal old wounds.
We’ve helped people like Jim, who was flown to be with his sister in her final goodbye. Having lost both his grandson and his wife suddenly, without a goodbye, he understood the transformative power of his visit with his sister and how it changed his bereavement and his life moving forward.
Every single flight has a story. Stories of mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, and friends with limited time left to share stories, gratitude, and love and to create moments and make memories that will live on.
Give A Mile is a small charity with big dreams. With your help, the cost of a plane ticket will never be the reason someone dies alone.
