This is a call out to all Cougars of 1964 and friends of Sammy Banno. Sammy is in dire need of operations on both of his eyes. Surgeries are scheduled. The doctors are just waiting on funds to cover the operations .
A very good friend of mine, Sammy Banno, who has opened up his home and car to me, has fought diabetes for over twenty years and the damage it has done to his body is overwhelming. Sammy's eyes are deteriorating at a rapid pace and his eyesight will be non-existent very soon leaving him to rearrange his life drastically.
Of the few things Sammy is still able to enjoy, watching sports (the Cowboys!) and fishing and well, just every day living life. His quality of life will soon be decreased tremendously if he doesn't receive this eye surgery. Each eye is estimated at $10,000 . Sammy has a kind heart. When Sammy was able to, he paid for his girlfriend's son to have surgery for lazy eye, which was disfiguring his face. In Sammy's situation, which has made him very depressed, the glaucoma, detached retina, and cataracts are waiting to destroy his eyesight at any moment, just like coach Zimmern of the Minnesota Vikings had happen to him just the other day.
Some other times which display who Sammy really is, is when his girlfriend had dementia. He took care of her for seven years. This is an exhausting disease. It made a two year old of Sue and she was completely and utterly helpless. When Sue died, Sammy gave away furnishings , jewelry, clothing, very nice things to Sue's caretaker.
When Sammy was in a position to assist someone in need, he did it. Sammy is not a selfish person. When someone close to him tricked him out of his emergency and life savings, he forgave them because he knows it would do no good to hate or be miserable concerning it. It would only stress him out more and even cause more health problems for him.
Sammy will be greatly appreciative for any help anyone can donate towards his surgery.
