Jerron Kappes, the infant son of Megan Lapka and Justin Kappes, entered the world under incredibly difficult circumstances. After an extremely long labor that ended in an emergency C-section, Jerron was born without a heartbeat. He needed resuscitation for 17 minutes which resulted in him being flown to the NICU in Sioux Falls, for a 6-week stay. He suffered a severe brain injury known as Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE), setting the stage for a long and challenging medical journey from his very first breath.
Despite overwhelming odds, Jerron continues to fight each day with extraordinary strength and resilience. He faces numerous medical challenges that require constant care, specialized therapies, and ongoing treatment — many of which are not fully covered by insurance.
This benefit is dedicated to helping Jerron access the critical care and therapies he needs to live the fullest life possible. Your generous support will directly fund treatments that could significantly improve his quality of life.
Since being discharged from his initial 6-week NICU in July, Jerron has already endured two hospitalizations in Sioux Falls, including a transfer to Children’s Nebraska in Omaha. Megan and Justin are doing everything they can — researching, advocating, and working tirelessly — to find the best care for their son.
Jerron's HIE injury has caused significant challenges, including impairments in hearing, vision, and swallowing, many brain abnormalities along with a seizure disorder and neuro storming episodes. The future is full of unknowns. Promising therapies exist that could help improve these conditions, but unfortunately, many come at a cost that falls outside of insurance coverage.
In addition to medical expenses, the financial strain of travel, time away from work, and the demands of caring for a high-needs child have added to the burden on this wonderful family.
Your support — whether through a donation, a share of this message, or a prayer — means the world to them. Together, we can help give Jerron the best possible chance at a brighter, healthier future.
