My Mom and I.

Hi, my name is Katrina Gomes, I am currently a junior at Jackson Memorial High School. I am fundraising on behalf of my mom and I. On Friday November 17, I got home from school only to find my step dad and forever best friend, Kevin Mikkelson, passed away. I called the cops and performed cpr for three minutes until the emt’s arrived. At that point I called my mom and his mom to explain what had happened, the hardest calls I could ever have to make. The emt’s were able to get a weak pulse using the aed kit allowing them to transfer him to the hospital. After hours of waiting, it was revealed to us that Kevin had gone too long without oxygen to the brain until I got there. I was too late. He had zero brain activity. Kevin went through more tests throughout the night and next day. Still no brain activity. This is when my mom, Kristina Gomes Mikkelson, had to make the hardest decision a wife could make, she had to take him off like support. It was at this point we learned Kevin was an organ donor. The morning of Sunday November 17th we took him off life support. Although most of his organs were severely damaged due to how long he had been gone, they were able to recover his left kidney which was transplanted into a six year old little girl. Kevin saved that little girls life just like he did mine years ago.

Kevin was there for me when my biological father wasn’t. He showed me what it was like to be loved my a dad. This man came to daddy daughter dances, brushed my hair, colored with me, he was and will always be the best friend i’ve ever had.

Kevin was a father, the best step dad, a husband, a son, a brother, a grandfather, an uncle, and a friend to so many.

When everything had first happened a family friend had made a go fund me with a goal of $10,000. We graciously received almost $6,500 through many generous donations. This allowed us to give Kevin a beautiful celebration of life and got us through the holidays.

As more time passes My mom and I are honestly scared of how we are going to make it to the spring without Kevin, our soul provider, because we both have seasonal jobs and work limited hours.
