At the age of 5 Sydnie was injured falling from a slide. She broke her arm at the growth plate. She has undergone 3 surgeries at Oakland Children's Hospital already to try and repair it; drilling into her bone to create new healthy cartilage, pins in her elbow and removing loose bodies from her elbow. Unfortunately it has only gotten worse over the years. Her latest 3D CT Scan has indicated that Sydnie suffered a lateral epicondylar fracture to her right elbow. X-rays revealed a deformed elbow, atrophy, shortening of the radial column and early degenerative changes along the radiocapitellar joint. What Sydnie feels on a daily basis is her arm locking up on her and every time she moves her dominate arm you can hear it grinding, her fingers are numb frequently and she experiences pain always.
Because she is done growing her pediatric Dr. referred us to an adult specialist at Stanford who said she couldn't perform a surgery to fix her arm. We got a second opinion from Dr. Mazur and his words to me were "if Sydnie was my daughter I would insist she be seen by the top elbow specialist in the world @ Mayo Clinic in Minnesota".
Since October of 2014 we had been directed, redirected and had numerous denials from insurance. I don't know if my efforts, prayers and continued follow-ups with our insurance helped, but Syd was approved last week to get a chance to have Dr. Steinmann at Mayo Clinic have a consultation with us!! If we get good news from our 1st visit, we will be scheduling surgery in Minnesota for Sydnie.
I never expected Sydnie's arm to fail the way it has and it kills me to think she will never have use of her arm the way a youthful teen should. Her entire life she has been extremely limited to any sports she wanted to try..
Insurance will only cover Syd's consult and all other expenses are my responsibility to cover. I have to swallow my pride and ask politely for any contribution that is comfortable for you to donate to my daughter Sydnie Mary. My words of thanks and gratitude are immeasurable.
