Snails on a Bike's How to Defend Yourself
Donation protected
Hello friends, family, and theater lovers!
We are a group of passionate Chicago-based theater artists putting on Liliana Padilla's How to Defend Yourself, and we're asking for your help!
What?
Snails on a Bike Theatre Co. is raising funds for our upcoming production of How to Defend Yourself by Liliana Padilla. In this extraordinary play, seven college students at a DIY self-defense workshop face the insidious ways rape culture steals one's body and sense of belonging. With sharp humor and brutal honesty, How to Defend Yourself explores what we want, how to ask for it, and the violator and violated inside us all. Snails on a Bike has chosen this piece because we believe it adds vital nuance to the conversation about consent on college campuses by examining how our identities shape our perspectives on sexuality and desire.
Who are we?
We are Snails on a Bike, a new theater collective made up of young Chicago artists (as well as your local baristas, bartenders and servers). We could not be more excited to have this chance to create work for young people and by young people in unconventional theater spaces.
This production is the collaborative effort of the following artists:
Directors: Mariah Koss and Yama Pouye
Cast: Isabel Alamin, Magdalena Dalzell, Gabel Dardovski, Jill Marlow, Ben Murphy, Hunter Siegel, and Izzy Valdes.
Fight/Intimacy Direction: Kira Nutter
Where will your donation go?
We are so grateful to Cheetah Gym for allowing us to use their space and supporting us in bringing this production to life! We are asking for your help to get us all the way there. Donations will cover the cost of publicity materials, our minimal set pieces and props, and scripts. But above all, we are fundraising to make sure that all the artists involved-- the directors, actors, intimacy and fight director, photographer and graphic designer-- are paid for their time and artistry, as we firmly believe that all artists should be paid for their work. We also believe that theatre should be accessible for all audiences, and your donation will help us keep ticket prices low (all performances will be pay what you can, with a suggested donation of $15.00).
Coming to the show?
Follow us on instagram (@snailsonabike), and stay updated on when tickets are available through our website! Performances will be March 21st-23rd, and 29th-31st. We can't wait to see you there!
