My name is Erika O'Leary and I have started this fundraising effort to help my amazing sister, Jena Busch Gorham, get through the next few challenging months of her life. 2023 has not been a good year for Jena. The beginning of this year started with a split from her husband of 15 years. Shortly after this emotional experience of moving out of her home, finding a sustaining job (after many years as a stay-at-home mom), and adjusting to time away from her children, she began to struggle with severe and debilitating physical symptoms. With months of doctor visits, scans, tests, and assessments, came a clear diagnosis: Jena has a rare form of cancer called Neuro-endocrine Tumor or NET. In addition to the cancer, her body has begun an auto-immune response called Retroperitoneal Fibrosis. This fibrosis is thought to be the cause of her most disabling symptoms, putting strain on both her circulation and kidneys. It can respond to treatment, but takes time.

Jena is a strong woman who has taken on every one of these challenges with courage and grace, but she is in need of immediate financial help to continue her fight for good health. Because she has minimal work experience on record, she does not qualify for disability and many social programs are not available due to her current marital status. She is working hard to find a job suitable for her current limitations yet it will be some time before she is able to earn a livable income. With only enough savings to continue paying rent through the end of her lease in January, she is focused on finding an affordable rental. Her current financial state brings challenges in this endeavor as well. Many of you have asked how you might help. What we can all do to help right now is provide a little financial relief through the next few months.
