What is Smokescreen?
Smokescreen is a tragic drama about Teddy, a young battle-fatigued soldier who, on the train journey home, faces his greatest fight yet.
The film is set post-WWII and touches on the themes of war, or rather that when the war is over, a battle still remains. This battle is a relationship between Teddy and Frank that comes to an end, in time with the train journey.
The six-minute short film will be produced by third-year film students from Deakin University. It is an assessment piece and will be submitted to national and international film festivals. In order to produce Smokescreen we are required to generate funds for the film.
Below is our film's Mood Reel to demonstrate how we want our film to feel on screen.
How you're supporting the film
As student filmmakers, we plan to shoot our entire film on an original early 20th-century train carriage that is time accurate to the story. This train is our top priority, as it will bring the script to life and allow us to produce our best work yet. The carriage is essential to the film's authenticity and will provide us with a unique and visually stunning setting. We are confident will be the perfect backdrop for our story and will help us to create a truly memorable film.
Those who look after the trains and the heritage railway line are a team of volunteers from the Mornington Railway Station (MRS), who have gone above and beyond to ensure our film is historically accurate and as impactful as possible.
You're supporting a dedicated team who have great ambitions to surpass the standard and tell an important story that is crucial in today's current climate.
Why is this film important?
This film will use the specific time period of the 1940s in Australian history to explore the universal concepts of grieving and reminiscing about a loved one. The 1940s was a time of great upheaval and loss for many Australians, providing a unique and powerful setting to explore the themes of grief and remembrance.
