The Great 8: Fund for Jed Smith and Family

This fund is but a small comfort to ease the Smith family as they mourn the loss of their son and brother Jedidiah Smith and make reparations to their great loss of property.

I ask the community, all prayer warriors, and all willing donors to stand together as one to help the Smith family overcome this terrible tragedy.

All donations will go directly to the Smith family.

On the evening of February 12, 2020 I received the worst phone call of my life from my brother; the lateness of the hour and by whom immediately told me that bad news was surely to follow. My brother notified me that an explosion had echoed throughout the Leverette / Chamberlain Ferry community. He then paused before saying, “We think it came from the Smith residence.”

My brother’s words fell silent on my deafened ears as he continued to speak, my eyes watered, and my blood froze. With my heart suspended in time I got off the phone and immediately called Walker Smith. I had no idea of knowing whether or not Walker was alright.

As I heard Walker’s voice answer “Hello” on the other end of the phone I found myself momentarily relieved at his safety, however, my brief moment of sanctuary was immediately broken when I asked Walker whether or not if he was alright. Silence followed.

Walker broke the silence with fractured words and quick breaths. My heart sank even further - this was the first time I had ever heard Walker cry.

Walker somehow found the words to tell me that not only was the house gone, but that his youngest brother, Jedidiah (known affectionately as Jed) did not survive the tragedy which had taken the house.

Jed Smith had turned 20 on February 3rd just the week before.

Jedidiah Smith is a well-known face in Lincoln County. His loss is a devastating blow to his church, his classmates, his teammates, his teachers, his extended family, his three brothers Ross, Walker, and Gideon and his parents Elliott and Candy. The loss of Jedidiah Smith is a loss to the community at large. People have taken to social media to express their grief by changing their facebook profile pictures to the number 8; the jersey number that both Jed and his older brother Walker wore while playing soccer for the LCHS Red Devils soccer team.

I have known the Smith family for well over a decade. I can truly swear and fully affirm by the love of my heart when I say:

As neighbors the Smith's have always been welcoming and friendly. If ever you are in need of a neighbor, then visit a Smith.

As devout Christians the Smith's have always put God above all else and any Smith  would give the shirt off of their back to their worst enemy were it a cold night. If you ever find yourself in need of warmth, then seek out a Smith.

Embodying true southern hospitality, there is no favor too big for a Smith to tackle. They have put shoes on my feet, fed me, cared for me, and above all - executed every deed with nothing but love and all while expecting nothing in return. I stand by my heart and soul when I vouch for each and every one of the Smiths.

The Smiths have suffered and triumphed more than any family that I know. The Smiths and their family are more than our neighbors, more than our friends, more than the faces we see at church or the voices that we hear as they cheer on our Red Devils - the Smiths rightfully represent what it truly means to be from Lincoln County.

I humbly ask that you find it within your heart to donate to this family. let us be the community to them the family that the Smiths have been to us.

Together we are strong, and if you find yourself in a position unable to donate, I ask that you pray for each and every single one of the Smiths.

Acts 1:14

"I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought."
