Smith College Jr. travels to Ghana & Greece!
Donation protected
Hi! My name is Sa'mya and I'm a junior attending Smith College. I'm double majoring in English Language & Literature and Africana Studies with a concentration in Community Engagement & Social Change. I have been presented with two amazing opportunities for the upcoming summer leading into my senior year!
The first opportunity is Rosemary's House, a writing residency program in Greece where I will have the opportunity to work on my senior thesis project, the beginnings of a short novel also known as a novella.
In the company of 13 select writers and a distinguished guest mentor, Doreen St Felix , I will refine my work, hone my craft, and develop my writing voice. The total cost for the program is $3,995 and plane tickets to Greece are over $1,000.
The second opportunity is Star Service & Study Abroad (SSSA), where I will be able to study, explore, and intern in the Accra area in Ghana! I will intern with PhixCare in Kasoa, Ghana. The summer 2023 projects include a number of collaborations with SSSA, CLED, PhixCare, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Health (Kasoa offices). Both CLED and PhixCare foster collaboration among professionals and organizations in an effort to improve services that support individuals and families.
This opportunity relates to my concentration in Community Engagement & Social Change in which my focus is advocating for houseless and marginalized communities. In addition to the public health assignments mentioned, I will also work on writing grants related to this cause. Most program fees for this opportunity will be covered by the Praxis Funding Grant provided by my school.
I have paid my confirmation deposit for both programs, a $995 deposit for Rosemary's House, and $350 for the Star Service & Study Abroad. I am currently saving up from my on and off-campus jobs. I am raising funds to help alleviate the program cost for Rosemary's house and plane tickets for either destination.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story and providing a donation if you are able to! As I continue to apply for grants provided by my school and save up from my jobs, I will update the site to reflect my true demonstrated need. If you have any questions about fees or my summer plans, please reach out via the platform! Have an amazing day :)
Tuition payment is due on April 14th for Rosemary's House. The tuition payment for Star Service & Study Abroad should be fully covered by my school.
