Smiles for the Soul

The smile of an adult breaks barriers, but a smile of a child melts the heart.

Peace Be Upon You All!

The Smiles for the Soul Brigade is an organization that aims to help struggling Seattle families, homeless, orphans, and PWD (people with disabilities) get back on their feet by assisting them with housing, food, clothing, and of course smiles. We've successfully impacted the lives of more than 500 homeless individuals by partnering with Seattle's Union Gospel Mission in offering full meals (Gyros with their choice of halal meats or vegetables, fresh healthy salads, fries, drinks, and desserts).

We have also sponsored a month worth of groceries for families who have suffered from domestic violence and are now living in transitional housing,

Most recently, the Brigade have dressed up as superheroes and distributed toys to the terminally sick children at the Children’s Hospital in Seattle in the hopes of giving the children reasons to smile throughout their treatments.

We are short on funds due to growing demands. We routinely hold fundraisers with our groups of volunteers, but we are asking for your help. With the funds raised, we will be able to continue our efforts by getting more of the youth involved whilst instilling with in them a sense of compassion to the world and those with in it.

THANK YOU!

PRESS RELEASE:

Muslim ‘super-heroes’ deliver toys, joy to children in hospital

(SEATTLE, WA 9/7/2015) – On Saturday, September 5, 2015, a group of Seattle-area Muslim college students and young professionals dressed as ‘super-heroes’ delivered toys to children at Children’s Hospital and spent time painting and playing games with the children, many of whom are undergoing serious medical procedures. After the visit, the group also delivered about two to four weeks’ worth of groceries to families in transitional housing, many of whom are survivors of domestic violence.

The event was organized by Smiles for the Soul Brigade, a newly-founded Seattle-area Muslim community group founded by Mosaab Zaki, a Seattle-area born and raised Washington State University student.

“Growing up, I remember my parents instilled in my siblings the Islamic teachings of giving back to society. I remember they always told me, ‘Mosaab, you are going to do everything you can to make our society a better place. You will give back,’ and I remember those words every day,” said Zaki. “Inspired by these Islamic teachings, I give back by organizing charitable events around the Seattle area including today’s event at Children’s Hospital, to give children and their families reasons to smile as they courageously battle through difficult and challenging circumstances.” he said.

“Our aim is to run these initiatives every month. Last month alone, we were able to provide meals to over 430 individuals experiencing homelessness in the Seattle area. I take inspiration from the hundreds of thousands of American Muslims who serve our nation everyday as public school teachers inspiring the next generation of Americans, nurses providing compassionate care, first responders saving lives, US military personnel keeping our nation safe, Red Cross volunteers providing disaster relief, and in many other roles giving back to society and building our nation’s vibrant economy.”

“We thank Toys R Us, Target, and alsadaqa.org for partnering with us. Toys R Us and Target generously donated the toys that we distributed and alsadaqa.org provided us with gift cards and store discounts, enabling us to purchase enough toys and games for the children,” said Zaki.

The group of five ‘super-heroes’ included:
• Mosaab Zaki as “Flash”
• Mohibullah Syed as “Thor”
• Khaled Zaki as “Green Arrow”
• Shayesta Syed as “Super Woman”
• Abdullah Syed as “Spider Man”

Khaled Zaki, who is Mosaab’s older brother, works full-time as an EMT and also volunteered to organize and participate in Saturday’s event. “American Muslims are part and parcel of our society and inspired by our Islamic faith, hundreds of thousands of us, including me, have made it our mission to give back to society. Muslims are taught by our faith to serve God by serving humanity and I do this every day in my work as an EMT,” said Khaled.
