Smile with your Eyes!

“We found a tumour and it’s cancer” were the words we never wanted to hear but in October 2017 we were dealt the devastating news that my husband Justin had been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer  - a Neuroendocrine Carcinoid Tumour on his bowel and we were immediately referred to the amazing team at the Neuroendocrine Tumour Clinic at St Vincent’s Hospital, Elm Park, Dublin under the medical care of Professor Dermot O’Toole and his team.

We were still reeling from the diagnosis and had no understanding of this form of cancer but on arriving to St Vincent’s we were provided with the highest standard of care and expertise by the Neuroendocrine Tumours team (NET).  The NET team consists of a dynamic multidisciplinary team and is now the National Centre of Excellence in this field and with their ongoing research aim to improve the outcome for patients with NET.  Scopes (internal cameras) and ultrasound scans rarely detect these type of slow growing tumours and unfortunately this form of cancer is quite difficult to diagnose and is commonly known as the “quiet cancer”.

Justin was assessed and underwent major surgery in January of 2018 including a right hemicolectomy with further surgery in October 2018 and prognosis was slow but steady with him returning back to work in June 2019.

In February this year, Justin went back for his routine check-up and where once patients have been sent abroad for this scan, the NETS clinic proudly had the new Gallium PET Scan installed and he was able to have the scan completed in Dublin.  Unfortunately once again, he has been diagnosed with a carcinoid tumour on his spleen, two on his liver and one close to his pancreas and has now been scheduled with further major surgery in the coming month.

As the cancer is rare and there is little publicity about it together with a large number of Irish people having to travel to Uppsala in Sweden for treatment to fight this form of cancer, we want to raise the awareness of NETs and above all help to raise funds to enhance the research and equipment for the National Centre of Excellence.

As a father of two (11 & 17)and husband of one! – we laugh and cry daily, keep positive and have all our faith with Prof O’Toole and his team and we would love you to join our fun selfie campaign “Smile with your Eyes” wearing your face masks and donating to this worthy cause.

Please share a Mask Selfie, tag 4 friends and donate 4 euro to this fantastic cause or feel free to make a personal donation if you so wish.

All proceeds of the "Smile with your Eyes" campaign will go directly to St Vincent's Hospital NETS clinic .

Thank you in advance for all of your support   xx
