Small Hours - New Short Film

Donation protected
Hello!

I am an animator and artist currently living in the north of France spending my days painting and writing my next film 'Small Hours', which is a short animated film about alcoholism.

A bit about me...

I graduated from the Royal College of Art last July with a Masters in Animation, I made two films during my time there - both of which have been screened around the world and even won a few awards along the way.

Please have a  look on my website oscarlewis.co.uk to see the sort of thing I have done in the past.

A big focus of my work explores mental illness. My last film, 'The Waves', (click here for Trailer) was based on my own experience of returning to the canvas after suffering from a severe breakdown in 2014. The whole horrific ordeal never really goes away, and it is of course deeply personal - but I found one of the hardest things to deal with (especially during the peak of the turmoil) was simply trying to express what I was feeling. And so the alienation kicks in, and in my case brought on a thunderous dependency to alcohol.
So an enormous inspiration for me to make this film is to try and reach out to others who are suffering addiction or that are perhaps on the trajectory of having a problem. Because it's something that becomes a lot easier to deal with once you have simply acknowledged it.

This film is about a very normal guy very gradually falling into dependency - and wasting away so much potential as a result. I want to try and show that it really can happen to anyone - particularly as a young adult.

I've now been sober for five months and for the first time in a long time I am purely focused and excited to just be working, and this film is the next big project in my mind that only needs the funding to become a reality.

But enough about me.

My goal is to reach £10,000 in total to start production in July 2017. Half of which I am hoping to raise here. And the other half will be funded by a production company.  Below is a brief projection of the costs.

About the Film

The Cast (so far)

I could not be more pleased that the wonderful Robert Bathurst (star of Cold feet and Downton Abbey) has agreed to narrate the film. click here for his IMDB page

The voice of the main character (Jackson), will be played by Robert Macpherson, a British actor who trained at the Oxford School of Drama graduating in 2007. He made his theatrical debut at The National Theatre London, before being cast alongside Kevin Spacey, in Sir Trevor Nunn's Inherit the Wind at The Old Vic.
UK tours and West End shows have followed, most recently the RSC's Olivier and Tony award-winning productions of Hillary Mantel's Wolf Hall and Bring up the Bodies which played in London and New York. (click here for his IMDB page )

*I am still looking to fill the role of Daisy (Jackson's Girlfriend). Don't hesitate to contact me if you know of anyone/ think you could do it? preferably a female aged between 25-35 and experienced in voice acting (but not essential).

The Synopsis

This film, although loosely based on my own experience, is told through the fictional character of Jackson. He is an amalgamation of myself and other close friends who also have an unfortunate affinity to addiction. Jackson is a talented musician who drinks through all hours of the day. The Film starts at an AA meeting which Jackson is attending looking utterly disconnected and bored.
As a member of the group tells a story about the day she decided to stop her substance abuse - Jackson gets up and storms out. We later learn the reason why. She was present during the darkest patch of Jackson's life when he was almost killed in an unprovoked attack walking home from the pub in the early hours of a morning - when he was too drunk to remember anything. The film jumps backward in leaps of two-year stints as we see exactly the stages of his alcoholism - but in reverse. So as to show the downward spiral the other way around.

I'll send out all reward levels in the post soon after the target goal is reached. Although please be patient for the DVD, prints and original drawings from the film as they will go out soon after completion.

Thank you so much!
