This is Timothy.
As an 8th grader, Timothy has the opportunity to go on an exciting tour with his classmates through EF Tours . The trip that has been scheduled is a 5-day whirlwind tour of both WASHINGTON D.C. and NEW YORK CITY!
But the trip costs over $3000.
Timothy's mom passed away when Timothy was six years old, and Timothy's dad is a disabled U.S. Army combat veteran. Timothy and his dad are on a fixed income and living in the small town of Poteet, Texas. Poteet TX is a town of under 3,000 residents with a per capital income of under $10,000.
As a 14-year-old, Timothy isn't old enough to get a job to earn the money for trip. He does help out his neighbors with yard work or caring for their animals to try to earn a little, but there is simply not enough work to do to raise the funds for a trip of this magnitude trip quickly enough, budgeting has been understandably difficult.
Since his mom's death, Timothy has participated in the Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Texas mentorship program. Timothy has been mentored by two Bigs, Corrie and Cherie, and Timothy's "Bigs" are the creators of this fundraisers. One of the ways that mentorship helps provide the tools youth will need for success later in life is through helping youth develop the 40 developmental assets that have been demonstrated to contribute to healthy development. We, Timothy's Bigs, believe that this trip will significantly contribute to his development of skills and values that will benefit him throughout his life. Some of the 40 assets that this trip will contribute to include: other adult relationships, caring neighborhood, adult role models, positive peer influence, high expectations, school engagement, bonding to school, equality and social justice, planning and decision making, cultural competence, sense of purpose, positive view of the future.
We want Timothy to feel confident that good things can happen to him, he has the power to shape his own future, and the world is a very big place, full of opportunity.
