Small Family Business Looted

This is a gofundme to help my father.

My name is David Yoo and I am writing on behalf of my father, Insik Yoo.

My father came from South Korea and built his business from the ground up to support our family of five. His store is called Best Mart Clothing in the South Side of Chicago.

During the events that took place in Minneapolis and across the nation in reaction to the tragic passing of George Floyd, Best Mart was among the many stores targeted by looters. It began on May 31st, the eve before our reopening (June 1st). The store had most of its merchandise stolen and property damaged. My father could only watch through CCTV as his entire livelihood was taken from him overnight. Needless to say, he watched every second and anticipated an opportunity to return to his store to retrieve family photos and important documents (such as government IDs and invoices). The opportunity came when CPD arrived to prevent further destruction the following Wednesday. Insik arrived at Best Mart immediately but was told by officers they were urgently needed elsewhere. He was given minutes to pick what to take and what to leave. We are now left picking up the pieces.

The purpose of this gofundme is to help my father get back on his feet. The loss of inventory and damaged property is worth approximately $100,000. There are many repairs to be made: window glass, registers, display shelves, display cases, show cases, and damages to the stockroom and more. Most of the inventory lost was nearly the entire collection of women's clothing, men's jackets, designer jeans, all work pants (Dickies), shoes, custom jewelry, and many more.

Our family has been a part of the South Side community for decades and stand with protestors for racial equality and police accountability. It was a tragedy what happened to George Floyd and his family, no one should have to experience such injustice. We understand this is pandemic is very difficult and no one has it easy.
