Hi,
We are SlumRise, a Community-Based Organization registered in Kenya and we started a fundraising campaign to support our project in Mathare's slums. Our teamis composed of individuals who grew up in Mathare and of like-minded supporters from around the world.
Mathare, located about 5 kilometers from Nairobi's central business district, is the second-largest slum in Kenya, home to over 500,000 residents. Young people in Mathare face limited access to quality education and employment opportunities, often resulting in unemployment, poverty, illiteracy and a lack of opportunity.
SlumRise is committed to helping Why Not School Academy meet the requirements for registration as a recognized school under Kenyan government standards. Our efforts focus on the following key goals:
- Replacing book materials destroyed in the April 2024 floods.
-> need of 700 € by 31/12/2024| just achievied- soon updates on our pages
- Providing consistent and nutritious meals for 120 students and staff. Currently, the lack of meals hinders students’ ability to focus in class and contributes to high dropout rates.
- Funding teachers’ higher education to ensure they are fully certified.
-> need of 30.000 € by 31/12/2026
- Upgrading classrooms to meet government regulations.
- Maintaining the school daily, ensuring it remains functional and sustainable.
By addressing immediate needs and investing in sustainable improvements, SlumRise is empowering both students and teachers, creating a brighter future for the entire community.
More information about the school:
The Why Not School Academy was established by the local NGO Karibu Africa Kenya with the support of donations and collaborative efforts from various parties. While the school was initially successful, it now faces significant challenges due to a lack of consistent funding. Essential services, particularly the canteen and kitchen, are struggling to provide students with balanced nutrition. Financial constraints have also resulted in reliance on volunteer teachers who, though committed, often lack formal qualifications.
