Slum2School Virtual Learning Fundraising Campaign

In a time when the COVID-19 pandemic has wrecked various systems, we at Slum2School Africa have a continuous responsibility in ensuring that every child’s right to education, good health, and a happy connected family is upheld. We have worked and continue to work with our teachers, parents, service providers, sponsors, and partners to keep our children engaged as we provide the support they need during this pandemic.

During our visits to communities and our beneficiaries, we were able to provide them with information about the COVID-19 virus, and how they can protect themselves. We tested potential carriers and provide them with healthcare services. We also worked in partnerships with some corporate organisations to provide relief materials to our beneficiaries, disadvantaged families and their communities at large. So far, we have reached 2,130 families [roughly 12,780 individuals].

Few months ago, we saw that thousands of the children in secondary and primary schools across slums and underserved communities weren’t learning and many were being engaged in various abusive activities. After surveying 1,310 students from over 10 communities we discovered 96% of the students surveyed were eager to return to school, and the top reasons were missed interactions with their peers and teachers. We also realized that without learning engagement, 92% of these children faced the risk of abuse and some of them wouldn’t return to school. We then took a very audacious decision to attempt to build the first Virtual Learning Classroom/Studio in Nigeria, and provide digital tablets and laptops to thousands of our children to aid their virtual learning experience.

So far, we have on-boarded/started running the virtual classes for 948 children living in several communities learning virtually through the Slum2School Virtual Learning Program amidst a pandemic that has led to the shutdown of schools worldwide. We are very excited to have you on board as we commence our Virtual Learning Fundraising Campaign and our goal remains to on-board 10,000 children on to the Virtual Learning Classrooms by the end of the year. We want to ensure that we leave no child behind regardless of their location or socio-economic background. We want more children to have access to these educational tools needed to excel in the 21st century. We are very confident that together with you on board, we would hit and possibly exceed this goal, giving hope to 10,000 children across slums and remote communities.

Over the past 8 years, because of amazing people like you who have become alliances in ensuring that no child, regardless of their tribe, gender, socio-economic class, is left behind, Slum2School Africa has identified and supported over 87,000 underserved children in 43 communities across several communities in Nigeria since 2012 and has provided scholarships for over 3059 children and youths in primary schools, secondary schools and universities.
We have also undertaken several projects in the past in line with our vision to ensure every child irrespective of their background is given the best quality of education. Apart from providing scholarships and series of support to over 87,000 children, we have also built some learning centres which includes Early Childhood Development Centres, School Clinics, Computer Labs, STEM and Innovation Labs, Enterprise Development Centre, e-Library and more. We have also worked with thousands of partners, volunteers and mentors who have supported our children with various learning tools across these learning spaces.
