Play-Based Learning for Kids in Johannesburg, SA

This fundraiser will aid in the creation of a mobile toy library for disadvantaged children in the greater Johannesburg area. This mobile toy library will provide children with resources they wouldn’t otherwise have access to, allowing kids to engage in play-based learning. Play-based learning is a common form of education used in preschools across the globe. It facilitates collaboration, communication, social and emotional development, and math and language skills.

The Slovo Centre of Excellence (SCE) is an early childhood development NPO facilitating play-based learning to aid upward mobility from the earliest stages. Established in 1994, SCE has changed the lives of hundreds of children and community members in Johannesburg. The center has collaborated with numerous community partners.

Unfortunately, due to the aftermath of COVID-19, the SCE lost its premises and has been unable to operate at its maximum capacity. To solve this, we are starting a bus project, Operation Every Child. In late 2023, a donor gifted the SCE a retired school bus - We plan to remodel and renovate this bus to transform it into a mobile toy library for children and families to borrow toys (free of charge) and engage in play-based learning. We aim for the mobile toy library to drive to different communities - from Soweto to Diepsloot - to set up toys for play led by community volunteers and SCE employees.
