The Harumatsuri (spring festival) is being planned by students from Cal Poly’s JSA, NSU, Hui 'O Hawai'i, GenKEY Sound Collective, and Kazuma Daiko in collaboration with the SLO Buddhist Church! Inspired by our love for Japanese culture, arts, and food, we wanted to create a lantern-filled night that brings together the Central Coast community. With only one other matsuri in SLO County (the SLO Buddhist Church’s amazing Obon Festival in the summer), we felt it was time for a student-run festival in the spring. This event is especially important in San Luis Obispo, where both the city and Cal Poly have predominantly white demographics. By organizing Harumatsuri, we hope to celebrate and uplift Japanese culture, ensuring it is seen and appreciated rather than overlooked.
To make this event possible, we are raising funds for decorations, materials for games and activities, and venue costs. Every donation will help us create an unforgettable evening filled with entertainment and hospitality. We want to give both SLO residents and students a place to come together and experience the beauty of Japanese culture.
We promise that any funds donated to this event will lead to a memorable Harumatsuri for all. On April 18th from 5PM-9PM, we invite everyone to attend and join us at the SLO Buddhist Temple for a wonderful spread of Japanese culture and values. Thank you for helping us bring this vision to life and for supporting cultural celebration in our community!
