Slipping Rib Syndrome: Logan's Road to Recovery

Hi! My name is Amanda and I started this GoFundMe on behalf of my best friend, Logan Alucci. Over the last year and a half, she has had three major surgeries on her ribs to address an extremely rare and often misdiagnosed condition known as Slipping Rib Syndrome (SRS). Basically, her ribs were not properly attached to the cartilage, which caused severe pain. Over the span of six years, she saw 30+ doctors searching for answers for her debilitating back and rib pain. Throughout this timeframe, Logan was sent for various medical tests which resulted in multiple doctors disregarding her symptoms due to the fact that imaging appeared normal and this syndrome is not often taught in medical school.

In 2018, her chiropractor was finally able to diagnose it as SRS. Despite this diagnosis, it still took two years to find a doctor who believed it was a real condition and was able to treat it. In June of 2020, Logan traveled from Pennsylvania to West Virginia to meet her surgeon, Dr. Hansen, who confirmed the diagnosis and she got her left ribcage operated on the next day. In December of 2020, she unfortunately needed a revision surgery. The revision was successful, however a few months after, the ribs on her right side began to slip due to years of overcompensation and trauma on the left side. After consulting with Dr. Hansen, they both agreed the right side needed to be operated on.

It is never a good time to need a third surgery, especially on your ribcage, but it could not have happened at a worse time. When Logan had her first two surgeries, she still had health insurance via her parents, but by the time of the third surgery, she had turned 26 and her new insurance refused to cover the medical costs. Dr. Hansen appealed their decision to no avail. The years and years of medical testing, on top of needing to pay for her third surgery out of pocket, has led to enormous financial stress, which she definitely does not need as she continues to recover.
