We are going to walk/run 100km each over the month of May to raise money for the Coronary Care Unit in Sligo University Hospital.

Why we're raising money for the CCU in Sligo University Hospital:

On the 23rd October we welcomed our little boy Èanna into the world. After a totally normally pregnancy and labour everything seemed fine. We were quickly adapting to our new life as a family of 3 but two weeks later I ended up back in hospital.

I woke up one morning and my entire leg had turned purple. We went back to Sligo Hospital and I was readmitted with a suspected blood clot in my leg.

The usual symptoms of a blood clot are swelling and redness in the calf. I didn’t have any of these symptoms. I didn’t have a section or an epidural, I don’t smoke and I was very active when I got home after Éanna was born. It turned out that I didn’t have a typical clot either. Instead I had a giant clot going up through my pelvis, up past my kidney.

After a few days back on the maternity ward the shit well and truly hit the fan when they discovered some of the clot had broke off and ended up in my lungs. I was moved up to the coronary care unit and because Éanna was so young he wasn’t allowed in. I had a filter placed in through a vein in my neck to stop any more of the clot breaking off into my lungs and for the next 3 days I had to lie flat on my belly while they pumped clot busting drugs into the back of my knee.

From the day I was readmitted until the day I finally got home the care and support we were given by the staff in Sligo Hospital was incredible. They went above and beyond to help us during an awful time and I want to try and give something back.

You just never know when you might need care like this so if you can spare a couple of euro I’d really appreciate it.
