Hi, my name is Slew of Memories.
I grew up in Tennessee running claiming races on a local race track. Because of this I was passed around to multiple owners. I was retired after breaking my leg, which led to me being shipped out to California. Once there, I started learning dressage and giving lessons.
One day I gave a lesson to a woman who had taken a very bad fall off another horse. She loved to ride, but fearful of getting on new horses, and especially of cantering (I LOVE to canter!). She got on me the first time and immediately felt safe for once. And she felt safe cantering me! She eventually became my mom and my forever home...
We have been enjoying ourselves together and are told we have a unique bond... But, I recently injured myself in my stall, on multiple occasions over the last couple of weeks. My mom is trying really hard to find out what is going on with me, but she is becoming limited on her funds (whatever that means...).
My mom padded my stall to keep me from hitting my head on the bigger pipes. And has set up a camera on my stall to see if she can find out how or why I’m hurting myself.
After my first incident where I hit my head, the vet noticed I had a severe heart murmur, where no heart murmur had been heard by the vet last September. I had to have a specialist out to do an echocardiogram. The specialist said I actually have two heart murmurs, both connected to the left ventricle of my heart. So the left ventricle is now slightly enlarged. This means mom now has to be extra careful with me. That would have been stressful enough for my mom (I just want to get back to work and don’t know why my mom feels I need to heal more first...), but then I hit my head again... And the left side of my face swelled up so I couldn’t open my left eye. And then I hit my head again, and I had to have soft food because I had a swollen jaw. (I have seen my vet a lot lately...) Right now I’m doing okay, but my mom really wants to know what is going on with me, so she can know how to keep me happy and healthy.
The vets think I may have something called EPM (that’s a parasite that attacks your central nervous system and leads to neurological problems), which is causing me to have seizures. If this is the case, it will cost about $1500 to treat me for one month. But sometimes it can take two months of treatment to get rid of. Once treated, the neurological symptoms don’t always resolve and there may be permanent damage. If I don’t have EPM, but just have seizures, this will require treatment for the rest of my life. The treatment is a couple hundred dollars a month, plus regular blood tests to make sure I am getting the right amount of the drug.
My mom works hard all week at her job, and still does side jobs so she could take care of me before all this happened. She is hoping others might want to pitch in to help her, or offer her more side jobs, since every little bit adds up and would help her out... My mom really loves me and just wants to do what is best for me. She has a really hard time asking others for help, but can’t do this alone...
