Slaughter Bound Horse Rescue

Donation protected
Hi Everyone,

We are raising funds to pull 4 horses from the Bowie Livestock Sale Barn, in Bowie Texas, this week.

These horses are all scheduled to ship to Mexico to be slaughtered for meat in just a few days. The death of these horses isn't the worst part for them. It is the inhumane living conditions, transport for several days with no food or water and the abuse and injuries many of them suffer on the route there and when they arrive. It's not just the old and injured horses that are sent to Mexico, it mom's and babies, wild horses, horses who have nothing wrong with them other than they were dealt a bad hand in life with owners who don't want them anymore.

Last week we rescued two horses from Bowie. Both are wild horses that came off an Indian reservation with hundreds of others. We chose them for their appearance, movement and soundness alone as they have never had any human interaction except for the traumatizing experience of being rounded up from the wild, crammed in a semi trailer and then being flagged into a stock at the sale barn to be aged and tagged for slaughter. They are afraid of humans, but they are not bad horses. Infant, after getting them home safely and spending over 5 hours the first day of gentling ans trust building we feel they are going to be exceptional horses with time.

We are both professional horse trainers and owners of Heritage Performance Horses in Waco, Texas. Andres has competed in the Mustang Makeover several times and although the herd that is destined for Mexico are not technically Mustangs, they have very similar characteristics and are still feral. They are said to have alot of Quarter Horse and draft horse in their bloodlines.

We would love to save them all, but unfortunately that's not possible. Each of these horses will need several months of gentling and training before we can rehome them to responsible horse owners.

Once they are gentled enough some will need to be castrated ($350 each), the older ones will need teeth floated
($175 each) , all will need vaccinations ($150 each) deworming ($15 each) and feed will cost roughly $800 a month to feed the 6 rescue horses...

It is unlikely most of these wild horses will be rescued. They are not branded therefore mustang rescues will not step up for them and they are WILD so the average horse owner cannot handle or train them.

We have chosen 4 more horses at Bowie we feel have great potential. Two of them are foals ($550 & $480) from the reservation one is a 3 year old ($580) from the reservation and the odd man out is an 8 year old ($980) that was seized from a neglect case. If by chance any of these have sold or shipped before we arrive Monday we will choose another to take its place. We are purposely choosing horses that are not injured or sick because the idea is to successfully train them for a purpose which will give them the best shot at having a life they deserve. That will allow us to rescue more and so on. We are not a sanctuary where we can take on the injured horses as much as they tug at our heart strings. The goal is to rescue and rehome as many as possible.

We are raising the funds for their "bail" , initial vet care and the first couple months of feed.

Horses have been both of our purposes in life and they have given us so much. This is something very special we can give back to them with your help.

Thank you
