Help Skyler Get the Surgery She Desperately Needs

Some dogs come into your life by chance. Others, like Skyler, feel heaven-sent.

If you’ve known me for any length of time, you know that animals are at the heart of everything I do. My beloved Standard Wirehaired Dachshund, Skyler, has been my steadfast companion — through long workdays, creative marathons, and the many ups and downs of life. She’s not just a pet — she’s family, and she’s been my source of comfort, laughter, and unconditional love.

Skyler’s story is a special one. She was bred by respected Breeders of Merit Shirley Ray and Maria & James Sakoda, and lived with Shirley until she was five years old. After my Longhaired Dachshund, Patti, passed away, I knew I couldn’t live without a dog in my life. I began reaching out to Dachshund breeders, and when I spoke with Shirley, she told me about Skyler. After hearing my story — and my lifelong involvement with Golden Retrievers and Dachshunds — Shirley offered to give me Skyler. I’ll never forget that moment. I drove from Albuquerque to Texas to bring her home, and for the past seven years, she has filled my life with joy, humor, and endless love.

Now Skyler needs one surgery involving two procedures — removal of a baseball-sized lump in her lower groin area and a much-needed dental with extractions. The combined cost is more than $4,000. This surgery isn’t optional; it’s essential to relieve her discomfort and restore her quality of life.

Throughout my career, I’ve devoted myself to strengthening the human–animal bond — as a former veterinary practice manager, a designer, and a storyteller for those who care for animals. I’ve spent decades helping veterinarians, animal professionals, and pet-centered businesses share their work with the world. Like many small business owners, I’ve weathered difficult seasons since COVID, pouring everything I have into sustaining my business and supporting others. But this unexpected expense is beyond what I can manage alone.

If Skyler has ever made you smile in a photo or story — or if you simply believe in the deep, healing connection between people and their animals — I’d be deeply grateful for your support. Every donation, no matter the size, brings us closer to getting Skyler the care she needs and back to her bright, tail-wagging self.

Thank you for reading, sharing, and caring about this little soul who means the world to me.

With gratitude,
Maryle & Skyler
