On May 18th, my sister, Amber, and Brother-in-law, Ethan, had taken Skylar to a doctor’s appointment for a weight check. Skylar had been having problems gaining wait and so her doctor had referred them to a nutritionist at Children's Hospital. Both Amber and Ethan felt something was more wrong with their baby girl Skylar because this just didn't feel right to then. Skylar was sent to a nutritionist to see why she wasn't gaining weight and had her appointment on June 15th. Luckily the nutritionist had Skylar do blood work at that appointment because they left the appointment thinking everything was okay. The next day when they got back to Saguache, they got the worst news about their baby girl. They were told she needed to head to the Salida hospital where they would need to do blood work to confirm their tests because she was going to be flown flight for life or Skylar was going to lose her life. That’s when they decided to bypass the Salida hospital and skip the wait and make the drive to Denver’s children’s hospital. Skylar spent 3 days in ICU and a week in a regular room. They found out that Skylar had an undetected UTI that the doctor had missed because Skylar showed no symptoms. Once they figured out about the UTI more tests were done to regulate her entire system from electrolytes, to keeping her hydrated, and her being fed by a feeding tube because everything was out of sorts on her little body. That’s when the doctor did a reflux test on her kidneys and bladder. Skylar scored a severe 3.75 out of a 5. The doctor decided to try antibiotics for Skylar to see if she would out grow it.
She’s been on all sorts of medication since they figured out Skylar’s problem. In January, Amber had a feeling something was wrong with Skylar again and took her in to find out that Skylar had another UTI, even though she’s on a antibiotic to prevent this. So the medication isn’t working to help Skylar. On February 3rd, they traveled to Children's Hospital and tested Skylar’s reflux to see if she’s out grown it at all, only to find out that one kidney had stayed the same and the other one has gotten worse.
So, what does this mean? Amber and Ethan finally gotten word that on March 22, Skylar will under go major open surgery to fix her reflux on both sides for her kidneys and bladder. She will stay in the hospital a few days along with her parents in a hotel. That being said, Ethan and Amber have to pay over $8000 for Skylar’s surgery since that is the max out of pocket expenses are for Skylar's private insurance. And that's on top of what they already owe in all of Skylar's other medical bills.
All proceeds will go towards this surgery and travel for appointments. Amber and Ethan didn’t want to ask for help but I finally got them to budge. As you all know, both Amber and Ethan do so much for our little community. Amber has helped our community by being on numerous community boards and Ethan always lends a helping hand along with working two to three jobs to support his family. Please, if you can do anything to help little Skylar out even if it’s just a prayer or good vibes. If you don’t feel comfortable doing it this way, there has also been an account set up for Skylar at First Southwest Bank. Thank you so much, we all appreciate it from the bottom of our hearts!!! Even if it's just prayers!
