Hello,
May I start by introducing our family. Dale and Jennifer, our daughter marnie and our miniature sausage dog skyla-pearl.
The reason we are reaching out to you kind people is due to our skyla becoming struck with stage 4 IVDD which made her 100% paralysed in her hind legs and tail. We was absolutely devastated as anyone would be seeing a family member in so much pain and the uncertainty not knowing if she'd ever walk again was heartbreaking as you could imagine.
The day of the accident was a sunday so we took her to the emergency vets as soon as we could, we knew it was going to be a days wait till we could get an mri but the pain relief was needed for our skyla to get through the night. The following morning we got skyla to our main vets who made all the right calls to get us in to a specialist vet who specialises in IVDD, we was lucky a space was free and we got her straight over for an MRI which showed the 2 blown disc's in her spinal cord. We gave the go ahead for surgery and the 4 day over night stay, they couldn't tell us if she'd walk again but gave us a very high percentage that should would and we knew she was in the best hands.
The first night was the worst for all involved, it was the first night skyla had stayed away from a family member and would be waking up alone and in pain. We bearly slept with worry and with little knowledge of what was happening and what to expect. The surgery went well and the road to recovery begins!
The road to recovery was full of tears, a lot of learning, a lot of worry, a lot of change but Skyla was the best patient and our little girl was so gentle with her for a just turned 2 year old. Skyla will be 3 in August so they have been best friends since day dot as we was pregnant with marnie when we first took skyla home. She'd sleep on the growing belly knowing her best friend was cooking.
We thought we was on a good path with everything, skyla was improving physically day by day and within 5 weeks post op she was standing on her own, going to the toilet on her own, still being walked with a sling to take the weight off her hind legs but everything is heading in the right direction with skyla's wellbeing. On to looking at hydrotherapy so we thought until we had a very unexpected email.
Our pet insurance which we have been using and paying for the last two years sent us an email 7 weeks post op telling us they are voiding our claim and closing our account with immediate effect, absolute shock. We obviously got straight on the phone to figure out what has happened as we had all our insurance documents printed out and available online to view at the vets with every step of this process. As we do not have papers for skyla as to who her mum and dad are which makes her as what we was told 'non pedigree' and mixed breed would be the option to go for as we can't be certain she is a full breed.
All skyla's documents are saying different things, our main vet's where she's registered is saying 'dachshund' scribbled on inner leaf of the vaccine book, the vet's where she was spade has her down as a 'smoothed hair' and the vet's who done the operation on skyla has her down as a 'miniature'
We now have just over £8,000 to cover and any help would be much appreciated.
We know time's are tough for everyone and we wouldn't be asking if we thought there was any other way, we would love to make some sort of dent in this bill which we wouldn't be able to do without your help. If we have anything left over it will be donated to a local dog charity.
Thank you for your time reading this.
