Hi! I'm Lucy. My mum is called Maggie and she's probably the best person in the world. When she was in her twenties she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, which has affected her optic nerve, causing progressive sight loss. Mum was a skiing instructor, she drove a moped, loved to travel (still does), she was a voracious reader, but unfortunately the loss of her sight made her give up a lot of the things she enjoyed. She's been remarkably brave, where others might have seen a diagnosis such as this as a full stop to their lives, mum has continued to be deeply kind, funny and optimistic. In the years since her diagnosis she's had two daughters, been on even more mad adventures and worked through fatigue, dizziness and the progressive loss of her sight. She's also now the proud parent of two dogs, seven chickens and a particularly mean cat. Needless to say, I am endlessly proud to be her daughter. I want to raise money for research into her illness, which remains incurable and is, I feel, not spoken about enough, especially when over 150,000 people in the UK alone live with MS. Mum makes me proud every day, the least I can do is chuck myself out of a plane so that those with her condition can get the support that they need and so that research to discover effective treatment and eventually a cure for this illness can continue.
