Build a school in Ghana

As some of you know I spent six months in Ghana in 2003 and became close friends with my host mother Irene, a school teacher at the orphanage where I volunteered.

Here we are at her home in 2008 when I visited her again:

Two years ago, Irene moved to a new village and decided to build a school there because there were no schools in this area. I wanted to support her  and with your help, I was able to raise over $3000 to begin construction of this new school.

We have made a lot of progress in the past two years and over 70 kids are currently receiving education here. There are no other schools in the area for these kids.

I put away some money each month for her and recently sent her $1000 which was used to paint the school and classrooms:

Irene needs an additional $3000 to complete the school, specfically for finishing construction on the upper level, furniture, toilets and tiles.

Irene would like to add actual windows because when it rains (and it rains a lot), water is flooding the classrooms:

We need more and better equipment to make sure these kids get a good education:

They built three classrooms right now, but have started a top level for more classrooms that have not been build yet due to lack of funds.

My dream is to give these kids a merry-go-round to play on during breaks but obviously other things are more important right now.

I typically don’t ask for money and it makes me uncomfortable but this cause is important to me and these kids future depend on it. I totally understand if you can’t afford to donate, but if you can, it would mean the world to me and really help these kids out! 

We've come so far already. Two years ago the closest school was over an hour by foot and now they have this right in their village:
