My name is Christie. I met someone at a shopping place wearing a backpack and holding her pet. She asked me very shyly if I would be able to buy some pet food. As we went inside to purchase I noticed her limp and some obvious recent injuries but what pulled me in was her precious smile and searching eyes. I learned that she had been brutally beaten by her husband and she was forced to flee with what she was carrying. As soon as her husband discovered this he cut off all funds. She told me she had just enough money for one night at a nearby hotel and was starting a job the next day. I took her to the motel and later learned she had not eaten anything but pretzels in 2 days but she had asked nothing for herself. I became so caught up with her story and her sincere hopeful attitude that my husband and I decided to fund her hotel and transportation to work along with basic expenses.
This lady (name withheld for security sake) is computer savvy and has contacted countless resources. Of course no shelter or safe house allows pets so she applied with a rescue service for temporary foster care. This never came through and a few days later she was offered a shelter an hour away, off any bus route for her job. We were impressed with her efforts and attitude but dismayed at the lack of help and resources available to her. She will receive her first months rent and deposit once she is working full time and able to pay other related expenses but otherwise has nothing but a minimum wage job. We invited her to stay with us until she can find an affordable alternative and save enough money for that to be realistic. She also has significant dental and medical needs and required an emergency tooth extra 2 days ago at the cost of $470. She would have to work 65 hours to pay for that and several thousand more is needed for the dental work alone. We continues to search for resources.
Our goal is to help her get back on her feet with a steady job and a safe place to live. If you wish to donate to assist in our efforts any amount would be gratefully appreciated and put to good use.
