I’m currently doing a skateboarding challenge, travelling solo across Europe over 4000km from Portugal to Turkey and I’m documenting it all on my Youtube channel Travels on Toast.
After travelling full time for 4 years with my girlfriend across the most beautiful places in Southeast Asia, we found ourselves sitting on the most magical beaches and feeling like it wasn’t exciting us anymore, so we needed a challenge. That’s when I decided to do this crazy trip.
In the process of coming up with this idea, we also thought it would be a great way to raise money for a cause that we cared about too. When considering this our hearts were brought back to Laos, a country we lived in for 2 years during the pandemic.
Laos is a small landlocked country that is one one of the poorest in Southeast Asia. After living there and learning more about the country, the people and their struggles through our local friends, as well as travelling across the country to some of the most isolated areas, we really wanted to do something to contribute to improving their lives, especially the future of the children who live there.
We decided education was a great place to start. Many children in Laos do not complete primary education, with high drop out rates and low enrolment rates in rural areas and numbers dropping significantly, to only 15% of kids progressing to secondary school. A very small amount of Laos GDP goes towards education, around 3%, which is one of the lowest rates globally.
We believe that access and the opportunity to have an education is important for any child and would love to help the children of Laos achieve their full potential. Our goal is to raise £30,000, which can build a school and provide basic facilities in a rural area.
If we exceed this target we could support better facilities and cover the costs of uniforms, school supplies, books and equipment for low income families and other rural schools. Our goal is really just to raise as much as we can to help them in the most effective way possible. We would conduct the distribution of these supplies ourselves and work with our local connections in Laos to help the children directly in the areas where it’s needed most.
Massive respect to Tom Drury who skated across Australia’s coast to raise money for the first skatepark in Laos. He also made me believe it was possible to do such a crazy adventure in the first place.
