My name is Ashley Joplin. I am a freshman at Legend High School in Parker, CO. I will be one of twenty students to represent my high school in Turin, Italy, at a Global Student Leaders Summit on The Future of Food, held June 30th-July 10th 2017.
I will get to explore how what we eat shapes our culture, environment, and economy. During the Summit, we will discover food's ability to connect people and present solutions to help feed our growing world. I will hear from world-renowned speakers, attend expert-led workshops and gain valuable insight into how food connects plates, people, politics and culture.
I will be using Design Thinking, a creative problem-solving technique used by companies like Apple and Google; this is a proven and repeatable problem-solving protocol that helps to achieve extraordinary results. I will join international teams of students and we will create and present solutions to this most pressing global challenge.
I am excited to attend this Summit for the following reasons. First, it represents an essential topic for our survival on Earth, including the use of GMO’s in the world’s food supply. Secondly, I will be interacting with my peers from around the world and learning new problem solving skills. Being with like-minded individuals who want to change our world for the better is an invaluable experience that I will cherish and use for the rest of my life.
Lastly, I am interested in pursuing a career in medical research and I feel this will be an amazing opportunity to help me see the relationship of our food supply and our health.
I greatly appreciate any assistance you are able to offer. I will also be fundraising locally and working to earn money to attend this once in a lifetime opportunity.
