The campaign to keep coal out of Oakland has become Keep Coal Out East Bay as we work with our allies across the Bay Area (and in coal-producing states) to assure that coal will never be shipped from our waterfront.

President Trump's announced $75 million to build a marine terminal in West Oakland does not begin to cover the cost of this terminal. We expect to deter prospective investors by the extensive community opposition visible in our yard and window signs. Their new design reflects the truth that it is our community, together, that will prevent toxic coal from defiling our city and savaging the health of residents and workers.

Trump's announcement has led Assemblymember Mia Bonta to propose AB40, which would require an Environmental Impact Report when large quantities of coal are involved, as well as updated reports if more than 10 years have passed or there is a change in the type or quantity of coal involved. There has never been an EIR for this facility that addressed the impact of coal. We are delighted at this legislative support and are working to help pass the bill.

We have submitted a letter to the Bay Area Air District outlining safety regulations they should impose if developers apply for permits, many of which were offered years ago by the developers. This has been signed by more than two thousand individuals and over 60 organizations.

We have organized working groups to reach residents all along the rail line, organize key sectors of the community, and create the infrastructure for our work. More volunteers are welcome.
