Hi, my name is Mara. For those of you who don’t know, i’m a caregiver for my older disabled sister, Jamaica (see photo). She is a beautiful and wonderful individual who has had a tough life, and tough is truly and understatement. In the last 6 months, she has been hospitalized 6 times. The last time she was diagnosed with sepsis and almost didn’t make it. The reason we created this gofundme is because in April we won the opportunity of a lifetime. A chance to take a trip to California, something we had been planning since i was 5 years old. Because of her numerous hospital stays, Jamaica and I have blown through our savings trying to stay afloat and still be able to take this trip. This is the only thing Jamaica has had to look forward to this entire year, after numerous operations and hospital stays. Unfortunately, securing an airbnb in California that is wheelchair accessible and ADA compliant is extremely expensive. Our hope is to be able to cover her medical supplies that insurance doesn’t cover, housing for the trip, and to get our AC fixed. We’ve gone this entire summer without it so far but due to her asthma progressing and being triggered by heat, we cannot keep going like this. We hope to be able to make memories that will keep Jamaica going and to give Getty a chance to see his friends at the conference for Canine Companions. Anything you can give would be OVERLY appreciated and deeply loved.
