Sis Got Tea: Accessibility Updates & Patio Space

Donation protected
Sis Got Tea is Louisville, KY's, Black-owned, woman-owned, LGBTQ-owned tea cafe, located at 976 Barret Avenue in Louisville, Kentucky (40204). Sis Got Tea acts as a safe, sober, accountable space in Louisville, particularly for Black folks and LGBTQ+ folks.

Serving a variety of delicious teas (from fruity, like our crowd favorite Plum Ripple, to floral, like our gentle Jasmine Oolong, to spicy and warm, like our unbeatable Extra Spicy Chai), refreshing tea alternatives (such as Italian soda, lemonade, and Ale-8), and delicious treats, Sis Got Tea offers an environment that cannot be found anywhere else -- tea, treats, and vibes.

After 3 years of trials, tribulations, online sales, wholesale relationships, and community support, Sis Got Tea opened its first cafe on April 9th of 2023. When Sis Got Tea first started on August 2nd of 2019, they had one goal -- to open a safe, sober cafe that acted as a gathering space for the community, particularly the Black community and the LGBTQ+ community. Their dream was to sling tea, serve the community, and have all kinds of sober events for those who need it the most.

Since opening day, the community has poured an immense amount of support into Sis Got Tea. Sis Got Tea has brewed almost 3,500 drinks, has shared countless amounts of hugs, and has gotten nothing but positive feedback. Sis Got Tea has become a staple of the community in a few short months.

Now, it's time to expand.

Accessibility Updates
Sis Got Tea strives to serve and be accessible to the community at large. A major hurdle in this is the lack of accessibility in the building. The entrance to the cafe is not accessibility-friendly due to the presence of multiple stairs. Because the building was built before modern American with Disabilities Act (ADA) law, the building is currently not accessible for individuals with mobility aids. To mitigate this, Sis Got Tea wants to install ramps on the front and sides of the building.

Patio Space Expansion
Sis Got Tea has a treasure located behind the building -- a concrete patio space. As Sis Got Tea's popularity grows (and as they plan more events), Sis Got Tea wants to remodel and repair the patio space. The plan is to have additional seating as well as host outdoor events on the back patio.

What Sis Got Tea Needs
Sis Got Tea's fundraising goal for the accessibility updates and patio expansion is $40,000.

All funds raised will go to the following:

Accessibility
  • Consultation and vendor fees for the installation of accessible wheelchair ramps to the front and side of the building
  • The cost of the wheelchair ramps themselves
  • Any fees associated with necessary repairs to have the wheelchair ramps installed
  • Any cost associated with due diligence regarding the accessibility or the wheelchair ramps

Patio Expansion
  • Costs associated with patio repairs and cleaning
  • Outdoor furniture and decoration purchases (seating, lighting, signage, etc.)
  • Landscaping and gardening needs
  • Equipment to host outdoor events (audio/visual equipment, tables, etc.)

Sis Got Tea is so excited for this next chapter. Every donated amount helps Sis Got Tea reach their goal -- to be more accessible and to offer more to the community.
