Hello everyone,

My name is Tao Xu, and I live in Markham, Ontario, Canada. I have been a proud Canadian citizen for nearly 20 years.

Writing these words is not easy for me. I have always believed in working hard, solving my own problems, and supporting my family through difficult times. I never imagined that one day I would need to ask others for help. However, the events of the past several months have left me with no choice but to share my situation.

I am the father of two wonderful daughters. Although they are now adults, both struggle with mental health challenges resulting from long-term family difficulties and are unable to live independently. My older daughter has been hospitalized six times over the past five years. Her most recent admission was on January 24, 2026, and she is still receiving treatment today.

Before my daughters' conditions became more serious, I had a stable and well-paying job. As their mental health deteriorated, I eventually made the difficult decision to leave my career and become their full-time caregiver. My priority was helping them through the most difficult period of their lives.

Around Christmas last year, I had planned to take my daughters to China for a temporary stay, hoping to give them some relief from ongoing family conflict and stress and provide a more peaceful environment for all of us. Unfortunately, life had other plans.

Then, on the morning of January 16, 2026, while I was shoveling snow, I suffered a severe heart attack.

To this day, I consider myself fortunate to be alive. Without the rapid response of Toronto paramedics and the extraordinary efforts of the medical teams at Markham Stouffville Hospital and Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket, I might not be here today to continue caring for my daughters.

I would like to express my deepest gratitude to everyone involved in my treatment and recovery. Your professionalism, compassion, and dedication gave me a second chance at life.

Unfortunately, recovery has not been easy. In addition to the heart surgery itself, the procedure may have caused damage to my kidneys. I now require ongoing medication and regular monitoring. Next week, I have both a kidney assessment and a pulmonary function test scheduled to evaluate my recovery. There is also a possibility that additional surgery may be required.

Although the travel agency promised a full refund for the airline tickets I purchased, I am still waiting to recover the funds. Despite repeated communications and assurances, the matter remains unresolved.

My doctors have advised me that I will be unable to drive or return to regular employment for an extended period of time. Due to eligibility requirements, I do not qualify for Disability EI benefits. I am extremely grateful for the timely support I have received from Ontario Works, but the assistance I currently receive—less than CAD $1,500 per month—is not enough to cover basic living expenses and other essential costs for my family.

Throughout my life in Canada, I have worked hard, paid taxes, and done my best to care for my family. I never expected to find myself in this position. Even so, I still believe in kindness, compassion, and the willingness of people to help one another during difficult times.

When my health improves and I am able to return to work, I intend to pay forward the kindness I have received.

I also remain capable of performing certain light-duty work. My experience includes industrial equipment maintenance, welding, forklift operation, heavy equipment operation, and property maintenance. If I can be of assistance to anyone within my physical limitations, I would be happy to help.
