Jennie's Singing Ministry

In the face of modernity, much of our humanity is at stake. We are losing site of our natural human birthrights in the face of a competitive, individualistic, consumerist culture. Further, our  blessed Earth is imperiled by globalized industries spun out of control.

A climate movement is mobilizing and must do so quickly and efficiently. Humanity is faced with a mandate to revolutionize towards sustainability. As a singer, song leader, and spiritual educator, my ministry will seek to return and reconnect the power of collective singing to social justice contexts, with an emphasis on environmental justice.

Upon graduation from BU School of Theology, I will embark upon a community ministry internship as a requirement for ordination as a Unitarian Universalist minister.  Essentially, I will be doing the ministerial work  of spiritual community organizing that usually does not get done because it is not resourced. I imagine much of my time will be spent building relationships with political organizers with groups such as 350.org and Mothers Out Front as well as building community with other song leaders in order to not only organize folks to show up at events (which is more than half the battle!) but bring the power of song to the movement as well. I have already found that this effort of engaging collective singing requires forethought and intention as our culture has shifted so strongly towards a performative, consumerist orientation. Folks aren't as used to singing together in public, and singing can be a truly powerful tool for shifting culture. We cannot afford to let it slip away.

These funds will cover material and time expenses for a 2 year, part-time internship (15-20 hours a week) beginning in the fall of 2017 - fall 2019.  In addition to this internship, I will continue to work as a gigging singer and teacher, and of course be the primary care giver for my children who will be entering their teen age years soon. I will need to pay my supervisor for one hour a week of consult in addition to guidance of a volunteer internship committee that meets once a month. In designing my collective singing ministry, I have discerned carefully how I can share my gifts to work for social justice, my deepest passion.

As I finish this chapter of my story , I think of the Ram Dass quote: "We're all just walking each other home." While it's been a bumpy and even painful journey at times, I never doubted that I was walking the right path. Identifying and settling into my deepest passion has been a blessing.  Without the gifts of your friendship, love and support that have held me and made it possible to complete my M.Div. degree in three years, I am quite certain I would still be wandering about quite lost and frustrated.

Thank you for considering a financial contribution to my singing for social justice ministry.
