Hello everyone-
Thank you for taking the time to read, share or contribute.
The morning of Thursday January 18th as I was getting ready to leave for work, Ian noticed water leaking out of our doorframe in the laundry room. That leak very quickly escalated as we went to grab towels from our master bathroom, and it started running out of the vents, ceiling, light switches, and then through the walls up under the carpet. Within 15 minutes we had standing water in both our master bath, and laundry room (adjacent wall) and full saturation of the carpet, in our walk-in closet, half of our master bedroom, and the whole hallway outside the boys’ bedroom.
It wasn’t for another 15 minutes that emergency maintenance arrived and located the source of the flooding-which was negligence of the upstairs tenant clogging her sink, and leaving it running all night long. Maintenance said there was close to 3 inches of standing water that she flooded her apartment with, after it he already started flooding ours. Despite mitigation efforts that started a couple hours later, we are still at 99% moisture readings in all four rooms affected from floor to ceiling.
This leads us to our current predicament. As most of you know, our oldest three children are diagnosed Autistic. As of right now, we had to file a claim with our renters insurance to put us up in a hotel with our displacement coverage. With the amount of drying out our apartment needs, it is 24/7 of deafening professional grade dehumidifiers and blower fans.
This not only occupies over half of our living space, but poses a safety issue for not only neurotypical small children, but especially for three autistic ones who don’t grasp the nature of the event and equipment now running in our home.
Displacement inconveniences aside, we also have all of our kids larger sensory items like our crash pad, climbing gym, sensory bins, and their calming corner set up in our home to help them with safe regulation. Living in a hotel indefinitely while our apartment under goes extensive renovation is not a feasible or safe option for our family more than the couple days we have to do this right now.
Our property manager reached out yesterday at 4:30 pm, and said they would offer us another available unit, but we are subject to signing a new lease with a new deposit in order to do so, along with the responsibility of cleaning out our current home regardless of renovation status.
Through no fault of our own, Ian and I with our four children and pets are in limbo and now having to bear the financial burden of someone else’s recklessness. We’re asking if you are in a place to donate to help us cover the unexpected cost of moving again, while Ian continues to work and supports us with one steady income, this is by no means a financially feasible option for us, but without making a decision by end of day Monday means we are displaced potentially indefinitely.
If you are not in a place to do so at this time, we appreciate anyone to at least share our story. Thank you for your generosity, love and well wishes as we navigate this difficult displacement. We just want to be home.
