Simon and Cairn's Adventure

Donation protected
We're heartbroken to announce that Simon passed peacefully at home on Monday night. His family - and an abundance of love and support from people around the world - surrounded him. Please see the latest update for details including a service to celebrate Simon’s life will be held Thursday 3rd August 2017, 10.30am at Forest Lawn Chapel

.................................................................................................

Simon has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer - an advanced internal melanoma. Initially, the disease moved so fast that he was discovering new tumours on a daily basis, surprising experienced oncologists. In the two months since diagnosis (February 2017) it has spread through his brain, lungs and lymph system.  We're all obviously hoping for the best; Simon has had radiation therapy and is currently on BRAF drugs. Estimates are a year?

Anyone who has ever had the pleasure of seeing Simon with his 12 year old son, Cairn, will know him as a strong, gentle, loving father. Just seeing Simon's eyes light up each time Cairn walks into the room is enough to reveal the strength of their bond. They hang out together, doing things like diving, cycling, skiing, messing around in (any) water - Simon, always looking to create little surprises and treats for Cairn.... not all of which his mother approves of.

Simon and Cairn want to make as many memories as they can, and spend some 'real' time together this summer. Anyone that knows Simon will agree that it's no surprise that he has come up with an adventure for the two of them - an adventure that we, the friends of the family, dearly wish to assist in any way we can.

Simon and Cairn's Excellent Adventure

This trip is a father/son exploration on a motorbike through small Canadian towns, interacting with the folks they meet along the way and recording it so that Cairn will always hold the memories of this most precious of adventures. Mischief and mayhem may be edited ....

They'll take Ontario Highway 11 - Canada's longest street (Yonge Str) up to Thunder Bay and then back to Toronto again. Cairn is going to be in charge of accommodation ... planning where they will stay each night. It will be recorded in picture and video, some of which will be uploaded along the way so that you can see the adventure unfold.

They'd like Charlotte (Simon's wife) to catch up with them along the way, perhaps in Thunder Bay.

We want to assist by raising funds for all related expenses, including funds for the adventure (bike, accomodations, exploits!), medical costs and any other expenses. The plan is for the bike to be sold after the trip to cover funeral costs.

We aim to raise $25,000 (£20,000 approx). The trip will start at the end of June 2017 and will last about 3-4 weeks.

Please help us help them to create lasting memories of laughter, happiness and the feeling of excitement as they mount up, fire up and head off into the sunset on the trip of a lifetime.

A note from Tom: I have known Simon, Charlotte and Cairn for the best part of a decade. Simon is my son's Godfather. I asked him to take that role nearly four years ago because I wanted my son to have the best father role model he could have. There is no better than Simon, and it is my wish to give Simon's family 'An Excellent Adventure' as a thank you from my family to his, for showing me just how great a Dad can be.
