Silvio is a 64 yea old man who has spent his entire life working hard, staying positive, and helping others. He ran his own small business for decades and never once asked for government assistance, even while living with a mild intellectual impairment.

Five years ago, Silvio still had his lifetime savings. But because of his trusting nature, people took advantage of him both overseas and in Australia. Today, every dollar is gone. Recently, he arrived at my husband’s workplace with nothing but a small backpack, exhausted, hungry, frightened, and unable to see properly from one eye.

Since then, we’ve worked tirelessly to find him shelter, medical help, food, and basic safety. Thanks to incredible people at the Department of Housing, Vinnies, Specsavers Chatswood Chase (Marshall and Jake), Dr Louis Gallo, Link2Home, Ask Izzy, and caring community members, Silvio now has temporary accommodation and some stability. We are helping him apply for the Disability Support Pension while also seeking justice through Legal Aid, though the chances are slim.

But Silvio now faces urgent medical needs:

• Eye surgery to save what remains of his vision

• Dental work due to severe pain

• Ongoing healthcare for chronic back pain and other issues

My children, Marco and Giulia, have even started an Instagram page to raise awareness and share Silvio’s journey, reminding all of us what compassion truly looks like.
