In November 30, 2019 I got a call from my stepdad in Venezuela letting me know that my mom, Silvia Alegrett, had been rushed to Sanatrix Hospital in Caracas, Venezuela due to bleeding, confusion, difficulty speaking, and severe respiratory issues (her lungs were functioning at 30%). Two days later, I got that call from the doctors, the one you never want to get, telling me that I had to fly to Venezuela immediately to say goodbye just in case. My first thought was “this can’t be happening again”. Sadly, I had lost my dad a month before and now I was about to go through that same nightmare all over again.
Silvia is a mother, grandmother, wife, journalist, former president of the National College of Journalism in Venezuela, a member of several NGOs, and a tireless fighter for freedom of expression in Venezuela.
She was found to have a deadly bacteria (staphylococcus), which was quickly invading her body – infecting her lungs, sending her into acute respiratory distress – and spreading through her bloodstream to three other organs (spinal cord, kidney, and liver), ultimately sending her into septic shock. The doctors presented us with a very unfavorable clinical picture with a high probability of mortality.
Silvia spent 45 days in the ICU. While there, she was intubated and in a medically-induced coma for 15 days. Silvia was literally fighting for her life; she was dealing with renal failure, pneumothorax (collapsed right lung due to a small hole), and dangerously low platelet count (9,000; normal levels range from 150,000-450,000). When she was finally extubated, it took her over a week to be able to speak, and have some mobility in her upper and lower extremities.
At the time of creating this page, while Silvia is still in the hospital, she is out of immediate danger, her lungs are improving, and she no longer needs supplemental oxygen. Although she is not able to walk yet, she is working with a physical therapist to get stronger.
While her insurance covered most of her stay in the ICU, because of hyperinflation and devaluation of the Bolivar (Venezuelan currency), and her length of stay in the ICU, her insurance was consumed in its entirety. This is why I am asking for your help. In addition to the current hospital expenses, after she is discharged she will continue to have medical bills to cover medications, nurses, physical therapy, nutritional supplements, etc.

El 30 de noviembre de 2019 recibí una llamada de mi padrastro en Venezuela informándome que mi madre, Silvia Alegrett, había sido trasladada de urgencia a la Clinica Sanatrix en Caracas, Venezuela debido a hemorragia, confusión, dificultad para hablar y problemas respiratorios graves (los pulmones estaban funcionando al 30%). Dos días después, recibí esa llamada de los médicos, la que nunca quieres recibir, diciéndome que tenía que volar a Venezuela de inmediato para despedirme por si acaso. Mi primer pensamiento fue "esto no puede estar sucediendo de nuevo". Lamentablemente, perdí a mi padre un mes antes y ahora estaba a punto de pasar por esa misma pesadilla nuevamente.
Silvia Alegrett es una madre, abuela, esposa, comunicadora social, expresidente del Colegio Nacional de Periodista de Venezuela, miembro de varias ONGs e incansable luchadora por la libertad de expresión en Venezuela.
Se descubrió que tenía una bacteria mortal (estafilococos), que estaba invadiendo rápidamente su cuerpo – infectando sus pulmones, produciendo un distres respiratorio agudo doble (ambos pulmones) – y extendiéndose a través de la sangre a otros 3 órganos (médula espinal, riñón e hígado), en última instancia provocándole un shock séptico. Los médicos nos presentaron un cuadro clínico muy desfavorable con una alta probabilidad de mortalidad.
Silvia pasó 45 días en la UCI. Mientras estuvo allí, fue entubada y en coma inducido durante 15 días. Silvia estaba literalmente luchando por su vida; lidiando con falla renal, neumotórax (colapsó pulmón derecho debido a un pequeño orificio) y un conteo de plaquetas peligrosamente bajo (9.000; los niveles normales varían de 150.000-450.000). Cuando finalmente fue extubada, le llevó más de una semana poder hablar y tener algo de movilidad en sus extremidades superiores e inferiores.
Al momento de crear esta página, a pesar de que Silvia aún está en el hospital, está fuera de peligro inmediato, sus pulmones están mejorando y ya no necesita oxígeno suplementario. Aunque todavía no puede caminar, está trabajando con un fisioterapeuta para fortalecerse.
Si bien su seguro cubrió la mayor parte de su estadía en la UCI, debido a la hiperinflación y la devaluación del Bolívar, y su larga permanencia en la UCI, su seguro se consumió en su totalidad. Por eso les pido su ayuda. Además de los gastos hospitalarios actuales, después de que sea dada de alta, continuará teniendo facturas médicas para cubrir medicamentos, enfermeras, fisioterapia, suplementos nutricionales, etc.
