Silicon Valley Chinese Documentary: Episode 2

From toiling railroad workers to quiet business owners, professionals and outspoken community leaders, the Chinese immigrants’ journeys from the Gold Rush era to today’s unique challenges are an incredible testament to their endeavors as they pursue dreams that would have been impossible back in China.

The Documentary:

Silicon Valley Chinese is an educational documentary series that records and examines the lives and achievements of Chinese immigrants in this unique capital of revolutionary high-tech innovators. The first episode, titled “The Power,” was finished in 2016 and won the Davis International Film Festival’s “Outstanding Entrepreneur Documentary” award. It premiered at Stanford University and then was presented across many cities in both the US and China including San Francisco, Los Angeles, Beijing, and Shanghai.

The upcoming episode, “Education,” turns the lens on four outstanding Chinese American individuals.  Vincent Zhou, born and raised in Palo Alto, is an American figure skater and 2019 World bronze medalist. Kevin Ji, a Gunn High School graduate and Computer Science major at Stanford, was a Board Member of Michelle Obama’s BetterMakeRoom.org where he advised national education leaders towards solving key issues in our educational system.  Stephanie Zhang is the daughter of renowned physics professor and Nobel Award nominee Sehoucheng Zhang. She and her friends biked across the country and taught STEM workshops to impoverished children during her junior year at Stanford.  Lastly, we follow Shao Yang: the first mainland-born Chinese to be elected to the Fremont Unified School District Board of Education.

Their heritage and American educational experience strengthened their drive and empowered them to forge their singular paths to success. In telling their stories, we shed light on the unique ‘formula’ of the Silicon Valley education.

We have finished shooting the footage but need additional funding to complete the editing process. Our goal is to raise $20,000 to complete the project. We will then have a premiere at Stanford University at the end of August 2019. To be able to represent our collective identity through this film, we need your donation today, no matter what size. In appreciation, your gift will be acknowledged in the credits of the film.
