For most of us, and blessedly so, sight is a given. The ability to see our children compete the sport they love, perform their musical talent, or even watch OU continue to be the best football team in OK is something we often take for granted (Boomer!). Our friend and sister, Amber Frost, is definitely not one to point out this lack of appreciation though. To know Amber is to soon forget that she struggles with blindness as part of her albinism.
Oculocutaneous albinism, or OCA, is an inherited genetic condition that reduces the amount of melanin pigment formed in the skin, hair and/or eyes. Although the degree of impairment can vary, individuals with OCA have vision problems that are not correctable with traditional eyeglasses. In spite of receiving the “legally blind” diagnosis at a young age, Amber became a true inspiration to all who know her. Fueled by the love of devoted parents who rejected the idea of a self-contained school, Amber went on to take AP classes in high school, graduate from the University of Oklahoma with a BBA in Accounting (Sooner!), and has had a successful career with the Oklahoma State Auditor and Inspector’s Office where she is now an Audit Manager.
In addition, as an avid reader, scrap booker, and longtime PTA officer at her children’s schools, it’s easy for any of us to forget the challenges she’s faced. Bumps in the road are usually met with a quick joke and an even faster self-provided accommodation. Yet, as we all know, beauty doesn’t lie in textbooks and spreadsheets. Beauty lies in seeing her son Noah march down the field with his high school band and in watching her daughter Katie cheer with her Tribe squad. In the ability to watch with her husband Matt their alma mater win again without head phones for the play-by-play or even in seeing the simple things, like drive-thru menus so that she can remove every possible vegetable from her meal.
This is why we want Amber to have the amazing eSight glasses she recently tried in TX and we need your help. Not yet covered by insurance, this assistive technology would allow her to see her children and perform her job in a way she’s never imagined. eSight glasses house a high-speed, high-definition camera that captures everything the user is looking at on two, OLED screens. Full color video images are clearly seen with unprecedented visual clarity and virtually no lag. eSight’s offers as patented Bioptic Tilt capability so that users can adjust the device to the precise position that presents the best view for them while maximizing side peripheral vision.
That’s basically a lot of fancy tech talk to say, “They aren’t cheap!”, but we think you’ll agree that no one deserves them more than Amber. She is THAT friend you can always count on to spread joy, encouragement, and laughter. We also know the ability to see her family, like most of us enjoy each day, would be a true gift she’d never grow tired of.
Please consider donating to our eSight fund for our friend and sister and thank you so much for helping us change her life like she has ours!
