What is Open pyometra?
Open pyometra in hamsters is a uterine infection characterized by pus or bloody discharge from the vulva. It's a serious condition, often requiring surgical removal of the uterus and ovaries (spaying) for treatment.
Symptoms:
- Discharge: A hallmark sign is a discharge of pus or blood from the vulva.
- Increased Thirst and Urination: Hamsters with pyometra may drink and urinate more than usual.
- Other signs: Swollen abdomen, lethargy, loss of appetite, and abdominal pain can also occur.
Treatment:
- Spaying (Ovariohysterectomy): Surgical removal of the uterus and ovaries is the most effective treatment.
- Antibiotics: May be used to manage the infection, but are not a definitive cure.
