If you know Sierra, you understand full well that she loves you. And has likely served you or your family in some way. She has tried very hard for a very long time to bring brightness and cheer to a world that just seems to be getting darker every day. These scales tipped suddenly toward us, her loved ones, on Saturday, September 6.

A drunk driver ran a red light and T-boned the car Sierra was driving at 10 o’clock in the morning. Her husband and 7-year-old daughter were in a car right next to hers, and while they were unharmed, both witnessed the accident and the harrowing scene thereafter. While there were many miracles and evidence of angels that surrounded them, Sierra was transported to the hospital in much pain, shock, and confusion.

The following hours brought more pain and confusion. Tests showed she had seven cracked ribs, three chipped teeth, 1/3 of a kidney that was not responding to blood flow, evidence of bleeding near her bladder, a cracked pelvis, a concussion and countless shards of glass on all sides of her body.

She spent the next few days in the hospital in much pain and only able to move vital parts of her body centimeter by centimeter. Her mother, Maggie, flew in to be of help with the kids and household. Mike is continuing to work and prepare to open a new fleet of buses in addition to the Notre Dame football air traffic, under his American Airlines responsibilities. He is at his wife’s side as time allows, and is attempting to meaningfully check in with each of the children daily.

Sierra was moved to a rehab hospital on September 11, and will likely remain there for 10 to 14 days. Trying every minute of every day to regain strength, movement, and her spirits. It is anticipated that she will still require several weeks of rehab and limited movement and ability once she is home.

Due to the driver unable to provide proof of insurance, the Stevensons have enlisted the help of legal counsel, and are navigating property damages, medical coverage and other insurance considerations. It could be several weeks or months before reparations, or even any conclusions can be made in these areas. In the meantime, there are expenses popping up that we, Sierra’s loved ones, don’t believe they should be responsible for. Those of us who love and support them are being asked to help float some of these expenses for a smoother transition back to regular life. They are also out a family car, and require that to be settled as soon as possible for that progression of the family and various obligations, responsibilities and activities.

What happened to our Sierra and her family was unfair and traumatic. They are insurance-paying, non-drinking, careful and contributive citizens. The person or persons that caused this to befall them, does not value any of the above. This devoted wife and mother did not deserve this. Please help us to right this wrong on behalf of our sweet friend.
