Fighting NMDA: Erik Anthony’s Voice in His Battle for Life

Nineteen months ago, my son Erik Anthony’s life took an unexpected turn.

A young man full of dreams and energy suddenly began showing symptoms that led him to remain in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) since January 2024.

The diagnosis: autoimmune encephalitis by anti-NMDA receptor antibodies, a disease as rare as it is devastating.

19 Months in Intensive Care

Since then, Erik has lived in the ICU. There he has received exceptional medical care, surrounded by professionals who have done everything possible to keep him stable and give him the best attention. During all this time, nothing has been missing inside the unit, and we are deeply grateful for that.

But life in intensive care is hard: endless nights on a couch next to his bed, daily uncertainty, and waiting for the smallest signs that bring back hope.

Father and Son

In this country, it’s just him and me.

Father and son, together, with no other family by our side.

He fights from a hospital bed, and I stand beside him day and night, learning to be his voice, his caregiver, and his strength when he cannot go on.

Although Erik cannot walk, speak, or take care of himself, he has shown moments that fill us with faith: he has breathed without a ventilator, moved his hands, and sometimes tried to say words like “dad.”

Each of those moments is a reminder that he is still fighting, that behind the illness is my son, with an entire life still ahead of him.

The Challenge Ahead

The real challenge begins when Erik leaves the ICU.

Outside of it, the insurance no longer covers medical expenses, therapies, equipment, medicines, and the daily care he will need.

That is where our small family—just father and son—stands alone, and where we need support.

Fighting NMDA: La Voz de Erik Anthony en su Batalla por la Vida

Hace diecinueve meses, la vida de mi hijo Erik Anthony dio un giro inesperado.

Un joven lleno de sueños y energía comenzó a presentar síntomas inexplicables que lo llevaron a permanecer en la Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos (UCI) desde enero de 2024.

El diagnóstico: encefalitis autoinmune por anticuerpos anti-NMDA, una enfermedad tan rara como devastadora.

19 Meses en Cuidados Intensivos

Desde entonces, Erik ha vivido en la UCI. Allí ha recibido un cuidado médico excepcional, rodeado de profesionales que han hecho todo lo posible por mantenerlo estable y darle la mejor atención. En todo este tiempo no ha faltado nada dentro de la unidad, y estamos profundamente agradecidos por ello.

Pero la vida en terapia intensiva es dura: noches enteras en un sofá junto a su cama, la incertidumbre diaria y la espera de pequeñas señales que nos devuelvan la esperanza.

Padre e Hijo

En este país, solo estamos él y yo.

Padre e hijo, juntos, sin más familia que nos acompañe.

Él lucha desde la cama de un hospital y yo lo acompaño día y noche, aprendiendo a ser su voz, su cuidador y su fuerza cuando él no puede más.

Aunque Erik no puede caminar, hablar o valerse por sí mismo, ha mostrado momentos que nos llenan de fe: ha respirado sin ventilador, ha movido sus manos y en ocasiones ha intentado decir palabras como “papá.”

Cada uno de esos avances es un recordatorio de que sigue luchando, de que detrás de la enfermedad está mi hijo, con toda una vida aún por delante.

El Reto Que Viene

El verdadero desafío empieza cuando Erik deje la UCI.

Fuera de ella, el seguro ya no cubre los gastos médicos, terapias, equipos, medicinas y cuidados que necesitará día a día.

Allí es donde nuestra familia —solo padre e hijo— se encuentra sola y donde necesitamos apoyo.
