Victoria Nichole Lopez, was born on September 30, 1992. Known to many as Vicky, she battled with an immune deficiency, sickle-cell, and despite the ongoing pain she was in, Vicky focused on living a full and joyful life. On June 9, 2021 Vicky's pain was ended and she was laid to rest.
In honor of Victoria Nichole Lopez, her family has put together a fund where 100% of proceeds will go to the fight against Sickle Cell Anemia, through research and assistance for the families battling the difficulties of this overlooked disease.
At the age of 27 Vicky documented a traumatic experience. In a recent submission she recalled her experience where she wrote, “... at a ripe age of 7 years old I was told I would die due to lack of oxygen...my mom kissed my forehead and said everything was going to be alright then left the room. I was sedated an hour after that conversation only to wake up to numerous tubes, IV lines and machines attached to my little body. On top of that I couldn’t move at all because they restrained me. I should have been scared out of my mind, I should have freaked out and cried my eyes out but I didn’t.” To have known Vicky, was to know a strong person, who never questioned her God, and never asked “why me”.
All across the world there are millions of people suffering from Sickle Cell Anemia. Approximately 5% of the world's population are healthy carriers of a gene for sickle-cell disease or thalassemia. The percentage of the people who are carriers of the gene is as high as 25% in some regions. Sickle cell warriors, with unique backgrounds, brilliant dreams, and aspirations sharing one story. A story Victoria understood all too well. In living this story she was dedicated to furthering the awareness of the severity of this disease, through sharing her personal experience and passionately supporting the sickle cell community.
