Siargao Relief Fund - Typhoon Odette

Donation protected
On December 16th, the small island of Siargao in the Philippines was hit by Typhoon Odette — one of the strongest storms on Earth this year and declared Category 5.

Right now, 95% of Siargao has been completely destroyed. People are homeless, starving and dehydrated as all food sources and clean water have been depleted. Those who were able to evacuate are describing the island as a "war zone." Siargao-based NGOs, such as Lokal Lab, were able to organize the first set of flights and boats to send relief goods to the island, including water and filtration systems, food, medical supplies, temporary shelter, etc. But we will need more.

Canadian and international friends — we need your help. This island community needs your help. If you have the means, please donate to this page — any amount will help. Salamat karajaw ❤️

(Updated January 11, 2022) WHERE THE FUNDS WILL GO: As of today, we've allocated 730,000 of the 962,157 PHP raised to groups such as Lokal Lab, Waves for Water and individuals on-the-ground (Karlo Pacheco, Jacque Oliva, Joe Balagot, Lina Noguerra) who are quickly mobilizing to purchase and deliver immediate relief goods and shelter to the local community. The next batch of funds will go directly towards initiatives focused on the rebuilding of homes and boats for the local fishermen and sustainable livelihood projects for the future of Siargao.

**More details about this fundraiser as requested by GoFundMe**

How I am related to the person(s) I’m raising funds for: I moved to Siargao 3 years ago from Toronto. It is my home. The people from Lokal Lab running the relief efforts are my friends. Individuals I am closely working with at the moment include born and raised Siargaonon and local pro surfer Ana Mae Alipayo, who will ensure goods will be delivered straight to the local community and families who need it, and Karlo Pacheco / Jacque Oliva who are strategising faster relief efforts to provide supplies to Siargao from Cantilan via land and boats. They have their own fundraiser as well — https://www.gofundme.com/f/typhoon-relief-for-siargao

My withdrawal plan to get the funds from your GoFundMe to the intended beneficiaries: I have cleared out my Chequing account and have transferred my own personal income into my Savings account. My Chequing account will now be solely be dedicated to the funds being deposited via GoFundMe. As needed, I will be transferring the amount to the intended beneficiaries through Remitly from my Canadian bank account to the intended Philippine bank in their local currency.

How the funds will be spent: As each day, each hour is different, funds will be allocated based on the most IMMEDIATE needs. As of December 24th, 2021, I will be focused on fundraising for the following:

- Emergency water and food — regions up north have been hit the worst and are furthest from the main centres, like General Luna. We will try and allocate as much funds for them via our Burgos contact
- Construction supplies and temporary shelters — it is monsoon season and all the locals living in Siargao are currently homeless. They will need lumber and building supplies, as well as temporary tarps to give them a roof over their heads
